Noel Carroll made a theory paper about the 'philosophy of horror', which has three major structures of horror films that she believes are always portrayed. The structure is:
1. The onset phrase where a monster or disorder is created.
2. The discovery phase where the monster or disorder is discovered.
3. The disruption phase, where the characters destroy/remove the monster and everything is fine.
This could apply to our film as the disorder is created with the coma, discovered throughout the film and restored at the end with him waking up.
There's also Todorov's three narrative structure, with the equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium, which is widely similar to Noel Carroll's theory.
Propp's Theory with 7 characters, two of which being the hero and anti-hero, and possibly even a 'princess' or helper. This relates to how we have a hero, anti-hero (being the monster) and helper (the mysterious woman who writes to the protagonist)
There's also the enigma code which we used throughout the trailer, as we needed to create mystery in the trailer so the audience is attracted.
WWW excellent use of Carroll
ReplyDeleteEBI can you give examples for the enigma codes please
